Lost In Music: Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds- The Carny

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have had a long, ever- mutating and shifting career, with the recent solo film featuring Cave in meditative mode, singing ballads and stripped- back versions of fan favourites. While it’s nice to focus on his lyricism and introspective moments, I still love when he -alongside the band- bares his teeth.

The Carny from the masterpiece Your Funeral My Trial is a majestic, nightmarish swirl into a travelling carnival company and their attempt to bury their horse, Sorrow.

Metaphors and seething vocals simmer in a tumultuous, menacing waltz influenced by Kurt Weill and Tom Waits. I think this version is one of the best I’ve seen.
