The debut album from Gum Country, Somewhere, features The Courtneys’ lead singer Courtney Gavin, alongside multi-instrumentalist Connor Mayer, Halle Saxon, and Jo Jo Ashworth.
Formed in Vancouver, their sound is a kind of post-grunge stew with Gavin’s guileless vocals providing a wide-eyed sweetness. They describe the music, potentially in a tongue-in-cheek manner, as ‘harsh twee”, an undoubted riposte to any labels they may be slapped with from music critics.
It’s a joyful record, with eccentric lyrics about the redemptive power of tennis (Tennis) and horticulture (Talking To My Plants), fuzzy guitars and a lot of swagger, a very self-assured start. Their recent relocation to LA should reap rewards.
