Formed in Normandy in 1992 by world-class jugglers Sean Gandini and Kati Yla-Hokkala, Gandini Juggling are famous for their critically adored show Smashed, which featured a prominent homage to legendary choreographer and dancer Pina Bausch, with its casual but elegant looking performers strolling promenade style in circles, albeit juggling with apples, as well as the infamous scene of discomfort, with the solo older female being manipulated like a marionette by men (Bausch’s statement on the in/visibility of older women).
This show, 2020, was shared today by the company via Facebook and Vimeo (see below) and is, as ever, a pure joy with surrealist flourishes. The movement is more free and a little looser, and the jazz music of other shows has been replaced by hip-hop and neon balls. All hail this maverick, brilliant troupe of eccentrics.
