Review: Speedy Wunderground Year 4

Uber-producer and label boss of Speedy Wunderground, Dan Carey has had a hell of a year, as evinced by this compilation from the label’s fourth year. As ever, the scope of genres is wild and varied, from post-punk to dancefloor electronica and the more esoteric.

So Squid and Black Midi’s experimentalist tracks (respectively, ‘The Dial’ and ‘bmbmbm’, fall into Beefheart skittering tempos and off-jazz territories, but Irish poet Sinead O’Brien has grit in a post-punk stylee, with ‘Taking On Time’.

Then, Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos guests on All We Are’s ‘Heart Attack’, a post-punk, post-disco melee for the twenty first century. The label is in rude health, on the strength of this. A club night on December 7th launches the album in grand style at Heavenly Social, on 7th December.
