Vanishing Point released full details of the tour for its main stage production of The Metamorphosis today, 26 November 2019. The international co-production with Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione (ERT) and Tron Theatre, Glasgow will have its World Premiere at Teatro Bonci, Cesena as part of VIE festival on 28 February 2020 with a second performance the following evening. These performances will be the closing event of the 2020 VIE festival.
Inspired by Franz Kafka’s short story, the production will be directed by Matthew Lenton with set and costume by Kenneth MacLeod and lighting design by Simon Wilkinson.
“Emilia Romagna Teatro, based in Bologna, Italy, seemed like the perfect partner for this production and the collaboration is another step on Vanishing Point’s long journey of internationalism and cross-cultural exchange,” says Matthew Lenton, Artistic Director of Vanishing Point. “
Tron Theatre in Glasgow has been a crucial partner for Vanishing Point over the years. Many of our early formative works were performed there and over the years we have returned often. This is our first co-production and we are very excited to be able to work with such powerhouses of theatre – one in our home city and the other one of Europe’s leading theatre organisations,” he adds
“We look forward to premiering this new production at the VIE festival in February 2020 and opening at Tron Theatre in March.”
“I had the good chance to know Matthew Lenton’s artistic research thanks to the staging of his show Interiors at the “Napoli Teatro Festival Italia” (2009) as well as through the international course (Wonderland) he held the following year for La Nouvelle Ecole des Maîtres,” says Claudio Longhi, Director Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione. “His work immediately impressed me and it is not without reason that Matthew was the first theatre director I met after my appointment as ERT’s director. We paved the way for an intensive ongoing collaboration.”
“For 2020 a new common adventure is on the horizon: the staging by Matthew of The Metamorphosis. The show, which will be part of the VIE Festival, organized by ERT, will present one of the most interesting texts of world literature with a fresh and unpredictable style, shedding new light on the complexity and contradiction of modernity.”
‘Tron Theatre is delighted to be collaborating on this new production of such a powerful and theatrically exciting idea as Kafka’s Metamorphosis,” adds Andy Arnold, Artistic Director & Chief Executive, Tron Theatre. “We have enjoyed a long association with Vanishing Point and look forward to Matthew and his artistic team delivering a memorable piece of work.”
Renewing its commitment to taking the Vanishing Point experience to as wide an audience as possible in Scotland, the company will build on the model established with The Dark Carnival in 2019. A two-hander touring show, The Metamorphosis:Unplugged, will be staged in venues from Wick to Dumfries in May and June 2020. The show will be directed by Joanna Bowman, Vanishing Point’s Associate Director.
“As a company we have always been interested in Directors theatre, which values the director as creator,” says Matthew Lenton. “We have also observed a lack of opportunities for emerging directors in Scotland, especially those who want to ‘do it their own way’, outside the conventional structures within building-based companies. So we launched New Directions offering direct, tangible opportunities for directors to develop their careers, providing them with a platform to help them take their careers further.
“We are delighted that Joanna Bowman has joined us as our first Associate Director under the New Directions programme and will work alongside me on the Main Stage production of The Metamorphosis being bring her artistic vision to The Metamorphosis: Unplugged.”
