Lost In Music: Radiohead’s ‘There There’ Video (2003)

thom yorkeHail to the Thief marked an even more esoteric musical direction for Radiohead, tiring of being pigeonholed as twangy miserabilists. Accordingly, their videos reflected this. Originally, they had wanted to provide a kind of homage to Oliver Postgate, maker of magical 70s/80s British children’s TV shows like Bagpuss and The Clangers. Sadly, he had other ideas, announcing that he had retired, and wanted nothing to do with the project.


owl weddingSo they turned instead to Chris Hopewell, who created a stop-motion video with Thom Yorke prowling through a bizarre forest in the middle of the night. It’s like Sylvanian Families reimagined by Jan Svankmajer- an unsettling, surrealist fable. There is a sad-eyed owl wedding, woodland creatures puffing on pipes, and sinister birds flocking.When Yorke finds a beautiful coat and expensive looking boots in a nook, he casts aside his own and puts them on, only to be cursed. Nature will surely have her vengeance…
