Dave Anderson‘s musical, the first in the Mini Musicals Season for PPP ,comes on like a frothy Jacques Demy; but lands in darker Weimar republic territory, with a strong pro-feminist, anti-war subtext.

Anderson, on fine droll form, plays Jakey, and is supported by Kevin Lennon and Miriam Ewell-Sutton as the young couple determined to make love work in spite of  their dire financial circumstances and the imminent threat of  war, with a nod to his own family’s struggle for survival.

The tone is at times a little uneven, but there are great performances from all and a superb narrator in the wonderful Christine Bovill, whose gorgeous smoky voice and cabaret presence brings lusty life to Anderson’s lyrics.

Stasi Schaeffer’s direction is tender and well-judged, and there is nostalgic, inspired choreography from Thomas J Bayliss. Dark clouds are coming-the only thing to do is face the music… and dance.
