Review:Sinkane-Life & Livin’ It

Multi-instrumentalist Ahmed Gallab, aka Sinkane‘s 6th album, Life & Livin’ It, is a bittersweet affair. The slick, ultra modern production sits at odds with lyrics which often fizz with self -doubt and introspection. Deadweight is a soulful example of this, with gorgeous handclaps and tabla percussion. The title track contrasts Gallab’s silky falsetto with deeper backing, which builds to a euphoric Afrofunk anthem.

In the main,it’s a glorious hybrid of influences. Passenger is reminiscent of last year’s breakout hit How We Be with moody sax break and gospel inflections, but recent single Telephone is a little too generic R n B. It is Won’t Follow that truly impresses though, a contemplative, slinky  fusion of  What’s Goin’ On in the melody line and Sly & Robbie’s minimalist and evocative 80s production.

Mostly a triumph then, but probably better to be enjoyed in July with a cocktail or six.
