Was there a finer single this summer than Manuela’s Cracks In The Concrete? I don’t think so. With angular guitars zigzagging around Manuela’s slightly distrait vocals,it is a gloriously imperious track-like a sexy hybrid of Stereolab and Wire.
At the heart of Manuela are singer Manuela Gernedel and husband Nick McCarthy, who was of course guitar hero for Franz Ferdinand.
Inspired by the French student riots of 1968, it looks at society from the outsider’s perspective- of everything being broken or imperfect- perhaps a wry comment on striking out with a new project, as much as being a philosophical statement. The new album follows soon.
