Review: Woodkid and Nils Frahm-‘Ellis’OST.

Nils Frahm and Woodkid artwork

Woodkid, aka French composer and musician Yoann Lemoine, has teamed up with Hamburg neo-classical composer and musician Nils Frahm for this incredible soundtrack album for the short film directed by the enigmatic JR, Ellis. Set in Ellis Island, the film focuses on Robert De Niro’s immigrant character wandering the empty hallways of the Ellis Immigrant Hospital, haunted by memories of the struggle for survival.

It’s an eerie, beautiful mini-album, with a music box delicacy, shifting tones and ominous chiming bells.Split into two parts, Winter Morning 1 and Winter Morning 2 which features De Niro’s moving monologue, it feels like a powerful and timely reminder of the legacy of immigrants’ journeys for a better life.
